چکیده

The study presented in this paper builds upon previous research into system identification using multiple models at EPFL. This identification methodology is based on the selection of sets of candidate models such that differences between measurements and their predictions are below a certain threshold value. The threshold value is a function of modeling and measurement errors. This paper presents results from a preliminary study on the estimation of modeling errors in structural system identification. Modeling errors have many sources, such as uncertainty in parameter values and finite element discretization. In addition to defining the threshold value, evaluating errors may also help minimizing errors and choosing better measurement locations. Two types of modelling errors are studied. The first is the error introduced by neglecting the effect of secondary structural elements such as roadway barriers and the second is due to element discretization. A composite truss bridge is used as a case study. Results from the study show that the errors due to exclusion of a secondary structural element may be significant and in such cases, they must be taken into account for system identification. Therefore displacement or rotation measurements are better for structural identification than strain measurements near beam-slab interfaces. The approach used and the results described are expected to contribute to increasing the accuracy of probabilistic studies on full scale bridges.

Fundamentals of 3D modelling and resource estimation in coal mining

The prerequisite of maintaining an efficient and safe mining operation is the proper design of a mine by considering all aspects. The first step in a coal mine design is a realistic geometrical modelling of the coal seam(s). The structural features such as faults and folding must be reliably implemented in 3D seam models. Upon having a consistent seam model, the attributes such as calorific val...

The Particle Filter and Extended Kalman Filter methods for the structural system identification considering various uncertainties

Structural system identification using recursive methods has been a research direction of increasing interest in recent decades. The two prominent methods, including the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the Particle Filter (PF), also known as the Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC), are advantageous in this field. In this study, the system identification of a shake table test of a 4-story steel struct...

Robust Identification of Smart Foam Using Set Mem-bership Estimation in A Model Error Modeling Frame-work

The aim of this paper is robust identification of smart foam, as an electroacoustic transducer, considering unmodeled dynamics due to nonlinearities in behaviour at low frequencies and measurement noise at high frequencies as existent uncertainties. Set membership estimation combined with model error modelling technique is used where the approach is based on worst case scenario with unknown but...
